Torrence Frank Shorter Sr. was born on July 22, 1973 to the union of Sam and Gertrude Shorter in Chicago Illinois. At an early age Torrence gave his life to Christ until the lord called him home on Sunday June 22, 2014. Torrence attended Martin A. Ryerson Elementary and Rezin Orr High School After graduating from high school he pursued his passion for cooking by attending culinary arts school where he received his sanitation license and began his career as a chef.
On July 24, 1999, Torrence married Cicely L Shorter, his high school sweetheart; together they have four sons Torrence, Terrence, Jerry and Joshua and two daughters Kiara and Geneva.
Torrence was a dedicated and fearless advocated for quality public education for all children, especially children with special needs. He was a Local School Council member for Laura Ward Elementary School(previously known as Ryerson.) In addition to his 6 children, Torrence was a father figure to many young people in West Humboldt Park providing shelter, love, advice, a shoulder to cry on, food or just a good laugh.
Torrence was the Board President of Blocks Together, a community organization working to improve the quality of life in West Humboldt Park organizing to bring Restorative Justice to schools in the community to prevent violence and student drop out, he worked to strengthen parent leadership inside local schools, and he organized to help bring jobs and more opportunities to the community he loved dearly.
The Torrence Shorter legal clinic is a “Pop Up” legal clinic for residents of zip codes 60651, 60647, and 60612. There are income requirements to be eligible for free legal aide. The Clinic is every other Tuesday 5-7pm. You can make an appointment by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling Blocks Together. You can also walk in. The Clinic does non-criminal cases including but not limited to; engagements, family law, employment, and housing.
